The motives of people depend on basic ideas of happiness the society has. As at the root of any desire lies the wish of happy life.
The point that most people act desiring to have a big account in the bank and high status seems at first glance an accurate observation. The world of capitalism shows the picture of fully life as the life of abundance and privilege. This life should have any excellent new good from the market as well as any kind of professional service for family. Most of people undoubtedly take this idea as truly natural and adjust their lives to such purpose. As usual, such people have few credits for a big flat, respectable car and the newest cellphone. Their hard working pays for looking like wealthy.
Nevertheless, it assumes that the most prosperous persons forced to act by passion rather than the desire to have high status. They are motivated to make this world a bit better. For example, the mainstream films “Star Wars” would be just regular action movie with huge budget for special effects and fighting scenes. However, the author-G.W.Lucas wanted to convey the idea that people need faith for valuable life. The desire to show big ideas and change something helped this saga to be successful than the calculation of the profit.
I think the pursuit of happiness motivates most of people to adjust to the world of capitalism and least of people to change the world at the extent they can.
